Reading Buddies Begin Another Year of Supporting SBISD Students
SBISD's Reading Buddies are back for another year, bringing community volunteers and second-grade students together to strengthen literacy skills and build meaningful relationships.
Since 2019, Reading Buddies has connected volunteers with students for 30 minutes of reading each week, providing encouragement, consistent support and opportunities to grow as readers.
The program's impact was highlighted in the 2026 Education Scorecard, a research project involving Harvard University, Stanford University and Dartmouth College, which reported:
88% of participating students showed gains in oral reading fluency.
More than 60% of the 340 volunteers counted had served for at least two years.
“We're excited to see so many community members in our schools helping students build their reading skills and showing them that their community cares about their success,” said Christopher Marroquin, Director of Community Engagement.
Thank you to our Reading Buddies for showing up each week, building connections and supporting SBISD's literacy priority and T-2-4 vision for Every Child!

GE Vernova Brings Hands-On STEM Learning to Westwood Elementary
Students at Westwood Elementary School explored the exciting world of STEM with volunteers from GE Vernova's Grid Solutions team! Approximately 200 students in grades 3–5 participated in interactive learning experiences, including:
Hands-on STEM challenges and engineering activities
An electromagnet demonstration
Opportunities to explore engineering tools
Career conversations with industry professionals
As SBISD's only Project Lead The Way elementary campus, Westwood provides students with opportunities to connect classroom learning to real-world applications and discover future career possibilities.
“STEM experiences help our students see themselves as problem-solvers, innovators and future leaders while they are still in elementary school,” said Principal Criselda Chavez.
Thank you to GE Vernova and its volunteers for investing in our students and supporting STEM education in SBISD!

Please check your child's backpack. We sent out a 2nd one to those who did not turn one in yet. Please complete it and send it when we come back to school on Tuesday 10/13/26. We need to know who will be coming so we can order the Pizzas for lunch and how many prizes for the student raffles. Emergency PTA Meeting Tuesday 10/12/26 from 3:30-4:00 in the Library. We also have the Fall Festival coming soon. Please take a look at the flyer we sent home with your child in the red folder to see what they need to bring.
